Securing DonationsSecuring Donations

For some riders this is harder than riding up steep hills. Remember the purpose of the ride, to help raise funds to find a cure for Cancer. And to help seriously and terminally ill children realize their dreams. Just like training for the ride start your fund raising early. Let everyone you know about the challenge you are undertaking, and the reasons why.

Your commitment when you registered for PPRAC is to raise a minimum of $1,000. Send letters to family, friends and local businesses. A follow up phone call can be very effective in raising funds. Remember to collect a certain dollar amount from a contributor as opposed to an amount per mile. The award levels are listed below. It is your responsibility to keep track of which contributor receives which award. Submit your money often and use a new pledge sheet each time you send in money. This is very important since in order to avoid confusion as to who receives awards and the actual total raised be each rider. Keep a copy of each pledge sheet submitted for your own records. Our goal for PPRAC XIV is $150,000 and on average each rider raises about $2,200. With over sixty riders, our goal is very achievable.

Below are sample letters. You can edit these letters to send to your contributors. Don’t be shy and ask everyone you know if they can help. It is also important to follow up after the ride with a personalized thank you post card or letter.

Pledge Tips:

  1. Ask for straight pledges rather than per mile pledges.
  2. Emphasize the cause.
  3. Approach a group of individuals at the same time. Start with the most generous person – others will be likely to follow.
  4. Be prepared to explain our cause and ride logistics – tell potential sponsors about our specific route of travel. Some people just can’t conceive of what 500 miles is.
  5. Start early and contact everyone you know – friends, family and co-workers. Secure pledges at your place of business, place of worship, clubs and other recreations groups.
  6. When approaching a business, have the name of a contact person before you go.
  7. Write letters to various businesses, friends, and associates. And follow up with phone calls.
  8. Give a pledge sheet to a person who will help our cause by taking the pledge sheet to their place of business and solicit pledges from co-workers.
  9. Don’t be shy – you’re not asking for money for you, you’re asking for the American Cancer Society and for Dream Come True.
  10. Don’t stop at $1,000. This is simply a minimum. Past riders have raised as much as $20,000. Set your own goal and work for your cause.
  11. Reward your donors with a personalized thank you note on your return or a postcard from the road.
  12. Make a copy of all your pledge sheets prior to send them with the money to the American Cancer Society.
